Why are pronouns important?
Acknowledging and using gender pronouns establishes an inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ groups. Calling an individual the correct pronoun shows respect and care for the individual’s gender and sexual orientation. Pronouns are an essential part of how communication should be made and it is not appropriate to assume someone’s pronouns.
What does LGBTQ+ stand for?
LGBTQ+ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer or Questioning. Over the years, LGBTQ+ has expanded to LGBTQIA+ where “I” stands for Intersex, “A” stands for Asexual, and “+” represents individuals in the community who does not identify with the acronyms listed. Other expanded acronyms of the LGBTQ+ acronym also include LGBTQ2S+ where “2S” stands for two-spirited. Another expanded acronym of the LGBTQ+ acronym is LGBTQQIP2SAA where “P” stands for pansexual, and where the second “A” stands for an ally.
What does each color mean?
Though the current Pride flag that has a rainbow color consists of six colors, the original Pride flag made by Gilbert Baker consists of eight colors. Each color Baker created had different meanings:

Pink means Sex
Red means Life
Orange means Healing
Yellow means Sunlight
Green means Nature
Turquoise means Magic and Art
Indigo means Serenity
Violet means Spirit
Each meaning behind each color is powerful and interconnected with each other. Each symbolization spreads hope and delight among the LGBTQ+ community. In the newly added triangle portion for the current flag:
Light blue, pink, and white represent the Trans Pride Flag
Light Blue means Boy
Pink means Girl
White means Transitioning
Black and Brown represent both
People of Color
Individuals the LGBTQ+ community has lost
Who is the “Mother of Pride”?
Brenda Howard, a bisexual woman born in The Bronx, New York, organized the Christopher Street Liberation Day March and is recognized as the leading figure of bisexual rights and equality. Her activism and protests for women’s health and social justice for members of the LGBTQ+ community have led to multiple arrests for civil disobedience but she never gave up on her fight for equal rights.
Are all Pride parades and celebrations held in June?
Not quite..though June is traditionally when Pride Month is celebrated, many parades located in the Southern States of the United States such as The Atlanta Pride, Orlando Pride, and Kentuckiana Pride are held closer to the National Coming Out Day around October because the temperature will be much cooler.
